Church Groups

Life at St James’ is richer when you’re part of it. Come along, bring a friend, or just drop in and see what fits – you’ll be welcomed. Below is a list of groups with a short description.

'The Chosen' - Viewing Group

On the first and third Monday of every month, at 2.30 pm, this group meets to watch an episode of The Chosen, an acclaimed TV dramatisation of Jesus' life.

Led by Joan Ridgway, our licensed lay minister, the group watches an episode and then discusses it. Each episode follows Jesus' story from the perspective of someone who encountered him: sometimes one of his disciples, or an important religious leader, but sometimes just an ordinary person, touched by their meeting with Jesus.

The group meets in the Committee Room of the St James' church hall. Come along for some good company, some good television and a chance to see the life of Jesus in a new light.

Home group

First Thursday of each month · Evening (Thursday). Led by Fr Brian Tubbs, this small gathering meets in a home for relaxed conversation, prayer and a chance to dig deeper into faith and everyday life. Curious? Email the parish office and we’ll connect you.

St James' Choir

St James' is blessed with a dedicated group of singers who add harmony to our worship at the Parish Eucharist each week. Regular rehearsals on Monday evenings include the hymns and music setting for the following Sunday as well as occasional anthems. Although the singers sit together in the choir stalls, they remain very much a part of the congregation, there not to perform but to bring added colour to the worship through singing in harmony. New members are always welcome and although an ability to read music is helpful, it is by no means essential. Practice tracks are circulated in advance, so it is easy to learn your part. Interested? Catch Tim Bayton after a service or drop him a line.

Craft Group

Bring a project or start one from scratch. You’ll find friendly makers working on artwork, crochet, card-making, tapestry or knitting for charity. Right now we’re sewing single bed sheets for an orphanage in Uganda (Warm Baby Project) and knitting knee blankets, warm hats and children’s jumpers for Moldova with Christian Response to Eastern Europe.

Everyone is welcome, seasoned crafter or complete beginner. We have wool, needles and patterns ready if you’d like to try something new.

Got a free Friday afternoon? Drop in for craft, conversation and a cuppa.

Gardening Team

Our gardening team keeps the lovely St James' church grounds looking welcoming, cared‑for and full of life. The group meets regularly to tend to flowerbeds, prune shrubs, plant seasonal colour and make sure paths and green spaces stay tidy and safe for everyone who visits.

Whether you’re an experienced gardener or simply enjoy being outdoors, you’re very welcome to join in.

Gardening tools are provided, and there’s plenty of time for conversation and a cup of tea along the way. Speak to Patricia Snell if you're interested in joining the team. (Note: sunshine not guaranteed!

Serving Team

Our serving team plays a quiet but important role in our worship. Before a service, members of the serving team prepare all of the elements for Holy Communion. Their care before and during the service helps the whole St James' congregation share in the sacrament smoothly and prayerfully.

You don’t need previous experience of serving to take part. Training and guidance are provided, and you’ll be mentored by an experienced server until you feel confident.

If you’d like to get involved, speak to Judith Wedgwood, and she'll be glad to help you take the next step, or email the parish office.
