Church Community at St James' ExeterChildren and Young People
Children and young people are greatly valued in the life and worship of the church.

Sunday School meets at 9.45am each Sunday morning during term-time. There are 30 children aged 4-11. Holiday Club is organized for the children during Holy Week.

11-ups is the name given by the young people themselves to a small group aged 11-13 (currently 15-20 members), who also meet in the hall and who also come into church before the Lord’s Prayer. This group is growing and we are exploring ways to nurture their faith.

Both the Sunday School and 11-ups have occasional outings and social events.

There is a full range of uniformed companies – Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, Beavers, Cubs and Scouts. Not all meet at St James’ church hall, but all attend the Parade Services and take an active part in them. (Parade Services coincide with the monthly All Age Communion and occur three or four times a year.)

In December 2002, St James’ hosted the inaugural Soul Survivor Exeter youth celebration. The first celebration was attended by 250 young people from all over the Diocese. Between 300 and 400 young people attend these monthly events. We are delighted to be involved in this initiative and will continue to support it.

Alpha
For some years we have run successful Alpha courses at St James’. The latest course was completed in January 2004 and the PCC is currently considering the most effective ways of following this up.

Social Activities
Social activities are an important mark and strong characteristic of St James’. They are organized by a very active and dedicated Social Committee. We also hold an annual Summer Fete and Christmas Bazaar, both of which attract large numbers of visitors from the local community.

Every Tuesday, we run a Luncheon Club in the church hall for between 30 and 40 local elderly people.

Outreach is a group of Senior Citizens who meet in the church hall on Tuesday afternoons after Luncheon Club for an informal cup of tea and chat. They have an interesting programme of speakers and outings.

We have a Men's Breakfast on a Saturday morning, approximately 6-weekly. Between 20 and 25 attend for a hearty breakfast and talk from a speaker.

Fellowship is a social group, meeting on alternate Thursday evenings in the church hall. They plan a programme of events for the year with guest speakers etc. They also raise funds for charities. Fellowship runs a profitable bric-a-brac stall and cake stall at the summer fete and Christmas bazaar.

We aim to have two quiet days each year away from the parish and an annual retreat weekend.
