The ChurchThe original St James’ church in St James' Road was destroyed during World War 2. The present Church was dedicated in 1956. It is brick-built in a traditional design (east-facing, sanctuary, chancel, nave) with architectural references to Santiago de Compostela. It has a high altar, a Lady Chapel and two side chapels, each with an altar. The baptistry is at the west end. The interior is airy and is designed so that natural light enhances its architectural features. The Church is well-heated. We have a sophisticated sound system with two radio microphones and free standing microphones and for those with hearing impairment we have a loop system. For wheelchair users we have a portable ramp and a wheelchair. The weekly Bulletin is available in large print format. HallBeyond the east end of the Church is the Church Hall, which was built some time after the Church. It is a large hall with a sprung wooden floor, a stage, a kitchen, a meeting room, parish office, male and female and disabled lavatories. We see the Hall very much as part of our “plant” and as offering a facility for the local community. The parish office is staffed five half-days each week. Garden of Remembrance, Church GroundsTo the south of the Church, between the car park and the Hall, is a small Garden of Remembrance. The main pedestrian entrance to the Church was a very modest gateway in a stone wall. During 2003 we created a new pedestrian entrance, with a wide pathway leading directly to the west door. On the south side of the path a garden area with seating is being developed. We have car-parking for around 20 cars and on Sunday mornings, we dedicate some of the parking for members of the congregation with limited mobility.
